More screen real estate. The result obviously is a fuzzy image, but you certainly get more space to see things and it’s still quite readable if you’ve got windowd eyes. You’re right, downsampling my x display to some lower resolution makes no sense.

And, the performance hit from doing the scaling in software wouldn’t be pretty, although I’m afraid I don’t know of a method to do this on the Intel drivers. And that’s part of why I’d rather have the whole thing scaled. For those that fought for it, freedom has a taste that the protected will never know. When I do that, I get a x “window” on the display that can be scrolled with the mouse pointer.
